Chapter 10
Since they had the box with them, Analise didn’t seem all that surprised when the two of them peeked into the kitchen and said they’d found what they needed and would be on their way. She had been in the middle of doing something with a collection of herbs and decorative glass jars — Rosemary thought she might be making some kind of infused vinegar, although she couldn’t be sure — and gave them an off-hand thank-you and told them she hoped they would have a nice rest of their day.
And that seemed to be that.
Now they were driving back to Caleb’s house, the box riding on the cramped back seat in his truck’s extra cab. It was almost one o’clock, and Rosemary wondered if he was going to ask if she wanted to grab lunch or something. That seemed the natural thing to do, and yet he hadn’t mentioned anything about getting some food or even if he planned for them to do anything at all after they got back to his place.
Maybe he didn’t have any plans. Maybe he was so frustrated by the way things had turned out that he just wanted her to go on her way so he could blow off some steam by playing World of Warcraft or Skyrim or something equally mindless for the rest of the afternoon.
She realized then how little she actually knew about him, about how he liked to spend his time. Yes, she knew he was a transplant from the Midwest, that he was interested in the occult and maybe one day wanted to be an independent filmmaker and producer like Colin had been, but that was about it. She didn’t know what kind of music he liked, whether he was an indoor gaming kind of guy or whether he preferred to go hiking when he had the free time.
And she told herself that was okay, because they’d only just met less than a week ago. They’d have plenty of opportunities to get to know each other a little better.
Or…would they?
She realized how ambivalent she felt as she tried to answer that question. And she shouldn’t be ambivalent. She should want to know everything about him.
Maybe she just had low blood sugar.
As they pulled up into the driveway of his house, Caleb finally spoke. “Sorry I’m being a grouch. I guess I just hoped that would have turned out a little better.”
“That makes two of us.” Rosemary paused and allowed herself a quick sideways glance in his direction. “I guess I’ll just have to try to reach out to the spirit world and see if I can get Madeline to cough up something a little more valuable. I’ll let you know.”
He pushed the button on the garage remote clipped to the sun visor above his head, then looked over at her, obviously puzzled. “You’ll let….” The sentence sort of died there as comprehension apparently dawned. “Oh, hell. You didn’t think I wanted you to go straight home, did you?”
She shrugged.
